While there was some increase in the number of urban Destitute households between 2015-16 and 2020-21, this category is projected to shrink till the end of the decade. As in the case of other income classes, down the income ladder, a higher proportion of people is to be found in rural areas and small towns. Nearly 83 per cent of all Destitute households are found in rural areas, and another 12 per cent are found in small towns with less than a million population.
